The beginning and the end of the Camino de Santiago

The city of Santiago de Compostela probably wouldn’t be as special without the Camino and the Camino wouldn’t be as special in another city. This city is a pilgrimage goal for many people and a symbol of a new beginning. After walking or cycling for several kilometres, it’s a must that you celebrate it as soon as you arrive at the Plaza del Obradoiro. Also, you should visit the Cathedral of Santiago at your arrival; it’s said that you will be forgiven of all sins. As of today, the front of the emblematic facade of the Cathedral of Santiago is covered with scaffolding. Most likely it will be removed in 2021, for the Holy Xacobeo Year. Around this date, the Puerta del Perdón on the east facade will also be opened to be able to access the cathedral from the Plaza de Quintana as well.

The Cathedral of Santiago is a World Heritage Site; it was raised over the place where supposedly the remains of the Apostle Santiago el Mayor were found. Back in the days, the cathedral was a church of the IX century that went through several construction expansions. In the XI century, the master Mateo was told to build a temple worthy of the holy remains of the Apostle Santiago. Thanks to him today we contemplate this beautiful cathedral of Romanesque style and inside we can admire art pieces like the Portico de la Gloria.

Later, in the XVIII century, other details were added to the Cathedral, like the current facade of the Obradoiro. If you have time, we recommend watching the botafumeiro (thurible) fly in the cathedral’s ceilings and hugging the statue of the Apostle to obtain his blessing.

If you want to enjoy from a different perspective of the Cathedral of Santiago and the city itself, we recommend that you visit the cathedral’s roof. Also, if you came this far doing the Camino, do not forget to pick up your Compostela; the document that certifies that you have completed the Camino in the Pilgrim's Office. Afterwards, we suggest you to recover from your pilgrimage in one of our cosy hotels in Santiago de Compostela.

What to eat in Santiago de Compostela

The great thing about Santiago de Compostela’s gastronomy is that the best food products from Galicia arrive here as well. You can taste delicious wines from different origin denomination, beef, and pork or fresh fish from the Atlantic coast. For dessert, we definitely recommend trying the traditional Santiago cake. It’s soaked in one of Galicia's intense liquors; you’ll love it. One of the favourite places for tourists and locals is definitely the Mercado de Abastos, here it’s possible for you to buy fresh food in any stall and ask for it to be cooked in the moment. If you stay at any of our hotels in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, you will have the opportunity to visit it.
