The locality supplies the city of Madrid its agricultural and fruit production due to its location, as well as wines and cereals. It is currently a town in continuous expansion due to the overdimension of the capital. During the Spanish Civil War the old part of the city was overthrown and rebuilt in 1945.
The most significant buildings are the Church of San Marcos, the Town Hall, the Chapel and palace-convent of Cristo de Rivas, the palace of Negralejo dating from the nineteenth century and the metal bridge where the old train passed Arganda.
There is also an archaeological zone called Casa Eulogio. In 1949, the castle of Rivas del Jarama was declared a building of historical interest, located on the hill and close to an old ruined chapel. Every September 29th a pilgrimage takes place that ends in the chapel of Cristo de Rivas.
